March 2020 update
Dear Kinder-families,
How quickly things changed from the first March post but please know that Ms Coen and I are thinking of you all and sending out big hugs and our best wishes. All your kiddos are amazing little people and we miss them so much. Enjoy your Spring Break time and we will figure things out together after that.
If you are looking for some joy - one of our favourite class songs is called "You're Amazing" by a local Edmonton artist named Martin Kerr. If you google him and play the song your Kinder can provide incredible accompaniment!
Take good care of yourselves.
To all our Kinders:
We are so proud of you and all you have done so far this year. Keep being awesome...we miss you very much.
Love Miss Coen and Mrs. Gysen
March 2020
March needs to come in like a lion to go out like a lamb! At this rate April is going to be fabulous!
All jesting aside we have welcomed March with three birthdays in the first week and are looking forward to Spring and our last few months of school. We are enjoying outside time when we can and are currently studying creatures that live under the sea. We are still practicing our letters and putting sounds to them - many of us are becoming quite the readers! We have also started our journey of becoming beginning writers through pictures and a few words. We have been trying to s-t-r-e-t-c-h out our words like elastics to hear the individual sounds and then spell them. We are not worried about accuracy at this point just using our ears and current letter knowledge to get words on our pages. The children are doing so well and have accepted the challenge willingly!
We are also still working on our research skills - we learned last month that we cannot simply believe everything that we see on the computer without checking at least 3 sources. We have been working on measurement too - big blue whales are on average, 75-100 feet long (that takes up a very large amount of our hallway) and giant Pacific octopus arms can be up to 20 feet long! We also discovered that fish need oxygen to breathe just like us but they have to get theirs out of the water running through their gills and we use our lungs. There is still so much learning to go - sharks, jellyfish, hermit crabs - we will see where our adventures take us.
Things to look forward to:
Our Celebrations of Learning will take place on March 17 & 18th. Thank you to everyone who has signed up already! PLEASE REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR CHILD! They will be leading you through a variety of centres to show off their amazing skills!
We will be going on a field trip on March 19th to the Bowling Alley and then Spring Break begins on March 20th.
Please feel to get in touch if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.
Take care,
Karen
February 2020
Dear Kinder-families,
January was such a loooong month but February has flown by. I cannot believe that we are into the last week of the month. It was a busy month - we learned the story behind Groundhog's day and made a cool puppet and craft to celebrate that Spring is on it's way. We enjoyed an incredible evening of celebrating our Kinder-families and I hope everyone who was able to come had a good time - if you were busy that night don't fret - we have two more - one in May and another in June.
We have spent most of the month learning about penguins and how they live, work, and play together. We learned that there are 17 different kinds and that they don't all need to be in super cold environments. We learned that some live in nests, they fight over rocks to build the nests, and some live in burrows along sandy beaches! We learned that they are both predator and prey since they eat sea creatures and bigger sea creatures eat them. We looked at pictures of their spiky tongues and an x-ray that showed that penguins do have knees1. We learned that penguins cannot walk backwards and don't have any teeth. We were kind of grossed out when we found out that big penguins use regurgitation to feed their babies but then decided it was okay because they are penguins and can't walk into Superstore to buy groceries - those babies have to eat somehow! Penguins have really kept us busy. Tomorrow we are going to learn that just because we saw it on the computer doesn't make it true. (there is a great BBC April Fool's Day penguin spoof that shows penguins flying through the magic of green screen. It makes for an interesting lesson on doing research and making discerning choices on what to believe.)
February has also been a great month for the tooth fairy - 9 teeth so far! We are also working very hard on keeping those yucky germs out of the classroom - A huge thank you goes out to Mrs. Flese for coming in with the black light and the "pretend" germs that glow when you don't wash your hands well enough! It was a great visual presentation for the kids to see that a splash of water and no soap doesn't get your hands clean. Another huge thank you goes out to all the parents who provided party treats for Valentine's Day and to those who could come in and help us navigate the halls and game rooms for the Silver Carnival. It was a very successful and fun afternoon.
Last week we had our Kinder-grad photos taken and they were so cute in their little caps and gowns! Hopefully the proofs are up online for you to see them now. There is no obligation to purchase them. For those of you who were not able to have your child's photos taken, I did speak with the photographer and he said you can call their office in Sherwood Park and arrange a time to go out there and have the pictures taken. Unfortunately with the number of kinder-classes in St. Albert, Edmonton, and surrounding areas, not to mention High School and University grad pictures they take, there was no option to book a retake day. Please call Icon Experience Photography, 780-449-3558, 176 Kaska Road, Sherwood Park, AB (8;30am - 5pm).
if you have any questions, comments, or concerns please get in touch. Don't forget to check out our Photo Gallery to see what we have been up to. If you click on a photo it will enlarge and you can scroll through them and no one's head is cut off.
Take care,
Karen
January 2020
Dear Kinder-families,
Happy New Year! I hope everyone was able to enjoy the Christmas break with their Kinder-kiddo and ushered in 2020 with some fun family traditions or celebrations. It was lovely to have almost everyone back today and listen to the excitement in the children's voices as they talked about their adventures, presents, and time away. I would like to take a moment to thank you all for the absolutely incredible array of gifts that you gave me - I am very grateful and appreciative of your generosity and thoughtfulness. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I am very blessed to have such incredible children and families to work with! :)
As we return to our school routine please remember to send in outdoor clothes and water bottles with your children. Many of the water bottles were left here over the break but don't worry - I washed them all before leaving in December and they were stored with their lids off so they did not go musty. We will work on getting those home this week so you can account for them and then send them back next week! Please remember to label everything that comes to school so we can match items up with their owners - it is very difficult with 24 children and several pairs of black mittens and snow pants that mysteriously end up on the floor.
We are going to take a few days to review our letters and sounds, numbers, shapes, colours, and rules for getting along before diving into our Polar Bears, Penguins, and Winter units. You can continue to help us out at home with letter recognition, early literacy practice with Home Reading, and counting. We will also be starting our Writers' Workshop where we are going to be learning how to become writers! 2020 is going to be an amazing continuation of what we started and I can't wait to see how far we can go. Thank you for your continued support from home. As always, please get in touch if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.
Take care,
Karen

Lest We Forget - I hope you were all able to take some time yesterday to reflect in way that is meaningful to you. In class we focused on the aspect of peace without dwelling on the atrocities of war. We talked about how lucky we are in St. Albert/Edmonton and Canada to have so many good things like our homes, food and clean water, the chance to go to school, and have the opportunity to play and be little kids because in so many places around the world children don't have these basic securities. These are tough concepts for adults let alone 4-5 year olds but our Kinders are amazing and did so well at the school assembly on Friday. I am so very proud of them.
As the month goes on we will continue to build on the topic of peace and how it applies to sharing, working in small and large groups (colour teams and whole class interactions at school), teamwork at home, school, and in the community, the importance of manners, and public expectations for our behaviour. We will also continue to work on our literacy and numeracy goals. Judging by the children's responses our Home Reading program is going well! The children are so excited when they exchange their books and want to show what they can read! I love it! Please remember that our Kinders do not have to be able to read to move on to Grade 1 and that our program is only introductory in hopes of initiating the routine before it becomes mandatory next year. We want our kids to find enjoyment in books so if you are finding it a struggle to get them to sit and read with you please let me know and we will organize a break from it for your kiddo so they do not become overwhelmed. We also understand that life can be busy so if you cannot do it every night it is not a big deal! (Do what you can, when you can.)
December is approaching and with that comes our Christmas concert. We will be starting our songs this week so you may hear snippets here and there. Our "costumes" are very easy this year - pyjamas! More details will be provided as we get closer to the performances. Please set aside December 12 to come and see us shine!
In true Alberta fashion Mother Nature is making it hard to know what to dress in on a daily if not hourly basis! Please make sure your child is coming to school in weather-appropriate clothing. If school is not your child's first stop of the day (ie they are at a daycare, day home or other childcare arrangement before arriving at school) please make sure their caregivers are packing ALL the necessary clothes to come to school. We have a small supply of spare mittens but not enough for the whole class.
It should come as no surprise that your children are growing! Please have a chat with them about the food in their snack/lunch boxes. Many children are stating that they are "starving" and are trying to eat all their food during our first break. We have been providing extra snacks to those who have eaten everything but we do not have full meals if they are eating their main courses at daycare. The school supplies are limited so perhaps packing a few extra non-perishable snacks for those super hungry days might be a good plan.
We also need the water bottles to come back to school. The children are getting very adept at filling them and it gives them easy access without taking an adult out of the room to supervise trips to the fountain. We send them home every weekend for a good washing but we do need them to be returned.
We also need to address the number of toys and items from home that are coming to school. They are becoming a huge distraction in the classroom especially when they get lost and/or broken. Our "Star of the Week" program will be starting soon (next week) and the Star will be allowed to bring one item per day to talk about and show the class. All other toys should be kept at home as we are losing valuable instruction time looking for them when they get misplaced or consoling when they get broken. If you have made the arrangement with me for a 'comfort item' let's please limit it to one, reasonably-sized, stuffy.
I think that's everything for now! Have a great day with your children and we will get back to our regular routines tomorrow.
Take care,
Karen

Thank you Kinder Parents for coming in for our Parent Teacher Conversations this past week! It was my best turnout ever. Please remember that you are welcome to get in touch any time if you have questions or concerns with your child's learning experience. Friday marked our 27th day of Kindergarten so we are still in the early stages of our year - there are a lot of days and topics still to cover, exploration, practice, and fun to be had. Please check out the Photo Gallery for October to see some of our adventures to date.
Enjoy the sunshine and the beautiful fall day. (I'm up to 8 bags of leaves plus the organics bin and our elm tree is still full so back to the outside work!). Have a great Sunday.
Take care,
Karen

September flew by and October is off to a great start. Prairie Gardens was a terrific first "away from school" field trip experience - riding the bus, visiting the farm, eating sorrel and lettuce right out of the garden, using the sluice boxes and finding our gems and other treasures, riding the tractor train, getting lost in the corn maze, watching the puppet show, picking a baby pumpkin, visiting the teepee, braving the haunted house (if we wanted to), petting the goats & sheep, and playing in the parks plus having our picnic lunch in the quonset! Everyone should sleep well tonight! Thank you to everyone who volunteered to come with us - things went very smoothly and we even got Mother Nature on our side with sunshine and warm weather for this time of year. :) Also, a big thank you to Ryan, our Volunteer Coordinator, for getting all our Big People Helpers organized.
Please wash and return the green shirts when you have a chance. I will store them here and then send them home in time for the next field trip.
Hooray! I finally have all the FOIP packages back! I hope to get some of our adventures put into the Photo Gallery this weekend so everyone can see just how much fun is going on in Kindergarten! Keep an eye on the Home Page to know what is coming up in the classroom and the school.
**If you would like picture re-takes (on October 9th) please let me know and I will make sure your kiddo gets added to the schedule. This is for individual portraits only - we cannot redo sibling pictures.
**Please note there is NO SCHOOL on October 14th or 15th (Thanksgiving and District-wide Professional Development Day). Normal classes will resume on Wednesday October 16th.
**Parent-Teacher Conversations will be held in the Afternoon/Evenings of October 16th and 17th. Mrs. Juse is setting up the schedule and will send out an email to all Keenoo families when it is ready for online sign-ups. Watch for her email!
If you have any questions, comments, or concerns don't hesitate to get in touch.

Our first full week was terrific! We are working very hard on learning our daily routine jobs like putting on our shoes, singing O Canada and handing in our Agendas, as well as eating the right food at the right time, taking turns, playing nicely with our classmates, remembering to use our "inside voice" when we are in the classroom, using our listening ears, putting our hands up to share our thoughts, and being a respectful audience member when someone else is talking. We have also had a successful fire drill, done a practice lock-down so we know what to do in an emergency, and had our first at-school field trip where we got to learn about bus safety and even jump out of the back of the bus. Photos will be posted under the Photo Gallery tab once I have all the FOIP paperwork back (please send in your package ASAP if you haven't already done so). School pictures will be taken this coming Wednesday, Sept. 18th - I will do my best to make sure all the little faces are clean. We also will have our Terry Fox Run on Friday, September 20th - please send your kiddo in red and white if they have it. Our first Scholastic Book orders are due on Monday if you choose to order (this is completely voluntary).
If you have any questions or concerns don't hesitate to get in touch.
Enjoy your Sunday!
Take care,
Karen
